North Island of New Zealand

On the trail to Cathedral Cove

Over the January school break we went to New Zealand. Sorry it took so long for me to do this blog. First term started busy and I never got around to it. Anyway we had an awesome time! We flew into Auckland (North Island) and got a big 12 seat van. We jammed all our stuff in the back. We brought 2 tents, camping supplies and all sleeping stuff so the van was pretty full! The first two nights we stayed at Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsula which is about 2 hours Southeast of Auckland. It was cold and windy the first two nights. Locals said the weather was unusual for that time of year. After that we headed inland to Rotorua known for the thermal activity. The whole town smells like sulfur but it was still very nice. We camped a few miles out of town on Blue lake which reminded us a lot of an Adirondack lake in New York. After two nights at Blue Lake we went south 4hrs to Tongariro National Park. We got to the campsite in a pouring rain! We couldn't see anything coming in. The next morning we woke up and saw huge snow covered mountains above us. Mt. Ruapehu was covered in snow which looked amazing! We went on a 14km hike to some neat blue lakes and Mt. Ngaurhoe was in the background. Mt. Ngaurhoe was Mt Doom in Lord of The Rings!

Cathedral cove...amazing!
After two nights we drove down to Wellington which was a 6hr drive. The cross wind on some of the roads was crazy! We got to Wellington and went to the city museum which was impressive. The next day we got on a huge ferry to cross the Cook Strait from the North island to the South island. The trip was 92km and took 3 hours and 30 minutes but the scenery was amazing! We could just see the South island went we left Wellington. The strait was calm at about 2m but they don't cancel unless its over 8m! We got into Picton early afternoon and we walked around. I will do the South island in a blog tomorrow. Enjoy the pictures from the North island.

Hiking and Diving

School got out a few weeks ago and now Aussie summer is in full swing. The first week we did a road trip down the New South Wales coast to Byron Bay. I surfed a lot and I'm getting much better (finally).
14m below sea level...

Claire and I also have been diving. Today we did our final dive to get out internationally recognized dive card. We started last year about this time and we just finished! We went to a dive spot called Manta Bommie off of North Stradbroke Island on the East coast of Australia. It was an amazing dive! We saw big manta rays and Zebra sharks (known as leopard sharks in the states). I took photos and videos with the GoPro. I will upload the videos onto YouTube sometime early next week. I will post a link, but my channel in called..."KingofAqua" if you want to see other videos from Australia.

We go to New Zealand after the new year and I will post a blog towards the end of January. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy the photos :)

Samoa Immersion Trip 2015

Recently I got back from the middle of the South Pacific (three days ago to be exact). Anyway I had the best experience of my life there! I learnt so much and had so many unique experiences. We visited schools and communities and spent several nights at an all boys school in Apia the capital city. The Samoan people are very simple and live very traditionally. School there is very very simple by our standards today. They have a chalkboard in the front of the room and no other technology. They did all their work on the board and copied it down into small notebooks. Personally I rather do school the Samoan way. It seems less stressful and they don't have to rely on technology to do everything for them which I think is very good even though technology is so helpful. Heck I wouldn't be writing on Blogger if there was no technology. So I guess I should be very thankful and that's the main thing I took away from this trip.

Amazing swimming hole.
The boys at Saint Joseph's College and the Samoan people in general were amazing. Some of the most friendly, caring people I've ever met. They loved the 17 of us from Carmel College and treated us like we were family. By the time I left two days later from the school I felt like I was family. I have to say that it was really hard to leave the boys. Especially my friends Tia and Josh who you will see a lot below in the pictures because we were always together.

Samoa had days where we were Tourists sticking cameras out windows and visiting snorkeling spots and beaches but it also had days where we were helpers and part of the community. Seeing what some people had made me feel so lucky. I've never seen children so happy to receive school stationery supplies. I learned a little bit takes you a far way in Samoa. At the special school I also learnt how to communicate with others using sign language and how a smile and a thumbs can make someone so happy.

Below are the photos I took over the seven days. It was an amazing trip and I hope to be back one day. After going there I  think the world would be a happier, better place if everyone could go to Samoa and see what I saw. Just remember how lucky you are. Enjoy the photos :)
